The room they smuggled me into was nothing more than an I.C. bolt hole. Small bed, basic S-Gen machine, and a monitor I could use to see what was happening in the outside world.
Theyâd locked me into what amounted to little more than an oversized closet. Shoved me inside, told me to keep quiet, and locked me in. They called it a âguestâ room. I would never put a guest of mine in a room so small. I paced from one end to the other. Thirteen. Fourteen steps then turn. Back and forth.
Could I break down the meager door with one punch? Absolutely. Would I? That depended on how long they were going to leave me here.
Ten minutes ago, I was so thrilled to be alive and on my way to Adrian that I vowed to wait in this tiny room as long as I must. Hours, if necessary.
Turns out, I was not as patient as Iâd led myself to believe.
But then, the last few years, working with the I.C. and Helion, Iâd become very skilled at lying. Even to myself.
Especially to myself.
Fuck.
The mating cuffs sent random jolts of pain up my arms, to my spine and down into my core. I needed them now like I needed air to breathe. I had a mate. She was real. She wanted me, too.
My beastâs pacing inside my mind was far more violent than my outward appearance would indicate to others. If I was impatient, he was violently so. Demanding to know where Adrian was. Who she was with. If she was safe. Or crying.
Or naked.
My cock had been in a constant state of semi-arousal since sheâd been forced to leave me. All I had to do was think of her and my entire being reacted. Beast. Man. Body. Soul.
If I still had a soul. Or a heart. I wasnât one to pray to the gods, as many in the Coalition did. Nor to the All That Is. The creator energy, the mother who had given rise to us all.
If praying would bring Adrian to me any faster, Iâd be on my knees.
But it would not. I had to wait, as Helion instructed. Wait for her to arrive. Hide until he could figure out a way to get us off this planet.
I turned on the monitor, eager for a distraction. All I saw were images of my face next to a warning to all citizens of Atlan. They had a raging, violent beast roaming the streets. The enforcement officer they interviewed instructed all citizens not to engage, but to call them.
I was to be killed on sight.
Fuck.
âHelion, where the fuck are you?â
As if summoned by will alone, a quiet knock sounded on the door. The space was so small a mere two steps brought me to the entrance. I activated the vid screen that would show me who was on the other side and saw her.
Adrian.
The beast surged forward.
Mine.
I told him to shut the fuck up, it was my turn and opened the door.
